Dental implants or tooth implants are a procedure for patients who are looking for a permanent solution to replace missing teeth.

Implants are designed to replace the root of the tooth. Made from metal (generally titanium), the screw-like implant is inserted into the jawbone and provides a way to secure a crown or artificial tooth in place.

The screw replicates the root, while the crown replicates the visible tooth area. Unlike false teeth or dentures which can be easily removed, dental implants are fixed and do not need to be taken out overnight. They are the perfect solution for those missing solitary teeth.

For this procedure, we organise for our patients to see a specialist, who first places the screw.

In the following months, as the bone takes hold of the implant, our patients return to the Highgate Hill Dental Centre, where our experienced dentists create and fit the new crown which sits on top of the screw, this second stage restores aesthetics and function to the area.

Dental Implant Process

If you are a candidate for dental implants, your dentist will work with you to develop a tailored treatment plan including total number of visits required. Here’s what you can expect:

Step 1: X-rays and other diagnostic tools are used to get a clear understanding of where the implant should be placed.

Step 2: Referral to the appropriate specialist, who will perform minor dental surgery to place the implant anchoring screw into the area.

Step 3: It may take a couple of months for the jaw bone to grow and take hold of the implant.

Step 4: Once firmly in place, we can create a crown or artificial tooth to sit over the top of the screw to restore aesthetics and chewing function to the area.

Which health funds are you a preferred provider for?

We are preferred providers for Medibank Private, MBF (BUPA), HBA (BUPA), and HCF patients. We also accept most major health fund cards in the HICAPS network. Being a preferred provider means you get the maximum benefit from your private health insurer.

Are implants covered under private health insurance?

Private health insurance will usually cover a proportion of both the ‘implant’ and ‘crown’ part of the procedure, however it is best to check what your individual policy states. If you would like to get an idea of the out of pocket cost of an implant, have a chat with our dentists and the specialist involved in the treatment,they will be able to provide a quote, so that you can confirm with your health fund.

Do I have to see a specialist for my implant?

Yes, seeing a periodontist or oral surgeon is part and parcel of the implant process. Placing the initial screw-like part of the implant is a highly technical procedure that requires the expertise of a specialist. Once this has been completed, you are welcome to return to Highgate Hill Dental Centre for us to create the crown for you.

Are implants painful?

During the minor surgical component of placing the implant, you will usually be under local anaesthetic. Some discomfort is to be expected after the procedure, however, your specialist will be able to advise you on appropriate pain relief for your situation. Most patients report that their discomfort resolves within a few days of the procedure. The crown procedure is straight forward and patient generally to not report any discomfort.
